दिल्ली में निकाय चुनाव के लिए रविवार को कड़ी सुरक्षा के बीच मतदान शुरू हो गया जिसमें मुख्यत: भारतीय जनता पार्टी (भाजपा), आम आदमी पार्टी (आप) और कांग्रेस के बीच त्रिकोणीय मुकाबला है। दिल्ली नगर निगम (MCD) के 250 वार्ड के लिए हो रहे चुनाव में 1.45 करोड़ से अधिक मतदाता अपने मताधिकार का उपयोग करने के पात्र हैं, जिसके परिणाम राष्ट्रीय राजधानी से परे प्रभाव डाल सकते हैं। शहर में कड़ी सुरक्षा व्यवस्था के बीच सुबह आठ बजे मतदान शुरू हुआ। राज्य निर्वाचन आयोग के अधिकारियों द्वारा साझा किए गए आंकड़ों के अनुसार, दिल्ली में मतदाताओं की कुल संख्या 1,45,05,358 है जिनमें 78,93,418 पुरुष, 66,10,879 महिलाएं और 1,061 ट्रांसजेंडर व्यक्ति हैं।
एमसीडी के चुनाव में 1,349 उम्मीदवार मैदान में हैं। मतों की गिनती सात दिसंबर को होगी। भाजपा और आप दोनों ने अपनी-अपनी जीत का विश्वास जताया है, जबकि कांग्रेस खोई हुई जमीन हासिल करने की कोशिश कर रही है। नए परिसीमन के बाद यह पहला निकाय चुनाव है, और यह मतदान गुजरात विधानसभा चुनाव के पहले चरण के कुछ दिन बाद तथा दूसरे चरण से एक दिन पहले हो रहा है। अधिकारियों ने पूरी दिल्ली में 13,638 मतदान केंद्र स्थापित किए हैं। दिल्ली पुलिस के एक वरिष्ठ अधिकारी ने पूर्व में कहा था कि एमसीडी चुनाव के लिए, लगभग 40,000 पुलिसकर्मियों, लगभग 20,000 होमगार्ड और सीएपीएफ और एसएपी की 108 कंपनियों को तैनात किया जाना है।
