कांग्रेस ने प्रधानमंत्री नरेन्द्र मोदी पर मणिपुर के लोगों के साथ ”घोर अन्याय” करने का आरोप लगाते हुए रविवार को कहा कि राज्य की स्थिति पर मोदी अब भी ”पूरी तरह खामोश” हैं। विपक्षी दल ने मणिपुर के मुख्यमंत्री एन. बीरेन सिंह की गृह मंत्री अमित शाह से मुलाकात के एक दिन बाद यह बयान दिया है। कांग्रेस महासचिव जयराम रमेश ने सोशल मीडिया मंच ‘एक्स’ पर शाह और मुख्यमंत्री की बैठक संबंधी खबर को संलग्न करते हुए कहा, ”नौ महीने हो गए लेकिन प्रधानमंत्री के साथ कोई बैठक नहीं हुई। मणिपुर पर प्रधानमंत्री की पूर्ण चुप्पी बरकरार है।
उन्होंने कहा, ”प्रधानमंत्री रोड शो के लिए गुवाहाटी जाते हैं, लेकिन वह इंफाल नहीं जा सकते और न ही जाएंगे। रमेश ने कहा, ”प्रधानमंत्री का मणिपुर के लोगों के साथ यह घोर अन्याय है। मणिपुर के मुख्यमंत्री सिंह ने शाह के साथ बैठक के बाद शनिवार को कहा था कि केंद्र सरकार इस राज्य के लोगों के हित में ”कुछ महत्वपूर्ण निर्णय” लेने की तैयारी में है। बैठक में दोनों नेताओं ने मणिपुर से संबंधित सर्वाधिक महत्व के मामलों पर चर्चा की। बहुसंख्यक मेइती समुदाय की अनुसूचित जनजाति के दर्जे की मांग के विरोध में पर्वतीय जिलों में आदिवासी एकजुटता मार्च आयोजित करने के बाद तीन मई, 2023 को मणिपुर में जातीय हिंसा भड़क गई थी। तब से जारी हिंसा में 200 से ज्यादा लोगों की मौत हो चुकी है।
कुकी समुदाय के एक वर्ग ने अलग प्रशासन या मणिपुर सरकार से अलग होने की मांग की है, वहीं मेइती समूह इसके खिलाफ हैं और विधायकों को ऐसे किसी भी प्रयास के खिलाफ चेतावनी दी है तथा उनसे ऐसे प्रयासों को विफल करने के लिए कहा है। मणिपुर की आबादी में मेइती लोगों की संख्या लगभग 53 प्रतिशत है और वे मुख्य रूप से इम्फाल घाटी में रहते हैं, जबकि नगा और कुकी समेत आदिवासियों की संख्या करीब 40 प्रतिशत है और ये मुख्य रूप से पर्वतीय जिलों में रहते हैं।
