दिल्ली हाईकोर्ट ने राजधानी में पेड़ गिराए जाने पर गुरुवार को रोक लगाते हुए कहा कि शहर में पारिस्थितिकीय और पर्यावरण क्षय को कम करने का और कोई तरीका नहीं है। पेड़ों के संरक्षण से संबंधित एक अवमानना मामले पर सुनवाई कर रहे न्यायमूर्ति नाजमी वजीरी ने कहा कि शहर में पिछले तीन साल में 29,000 पेड़ काटे गए। उन्होंने कहा, हमने पेड़ों को काटे जाने पर रोक लगा दी है। सुनवाई की अगली तारीख तक पेड़ों को नहीं गिराया जाएगा। मामले में अगली सुनवाई के लिए दो जून की तारीख तय की गई। उन्होंने कहा, पिछले तीन साल में कुल 29,946 पेड़ काटने की अनुमति दी गयी, जो गणना करने पर 27 पेड़ प्रतिदिन या 1.13 पेड़ प्रति घंटा है।
अदालत ने कहा कि जिन पेड़ों को काटने की अनुमति दी गई उनके घेरे और आयु को लेकर कोई रिकॉर्ड नहीं है। उसने कहा, इसलिए यह जनहित में और वर्तमान तथा भावी पीढ़ियों के लिए पर्यावरण के हित में होगा कि सुनवाई की अगली तारीख तक दिल्ली में पेड़ों को काटने की अनुमति नहीं दी जाए और सुनिश्चित किया जाए कि पेड़ों को तभी गिराया जाए, जब आवेदक उसे कम से कम दूसरी जगह लगाने का आश्वासन दे। निश्चित रूप से शहर के पारिस्थितिकीय और पर्यावरण क्षय को कम करने का और कोई मार्ग नहीं है।
